The Philadelphia Outward Bound School (POBS) strengthens and empowers individuals to effect positive change in their communities. POBS Instructors design and lead customized backpacking, canoeing, rock climbing, and team-building programs that inspire both youth and adults to realize their true potential through challenge and discovery.
Throughout our program year (from late March to mid-November), we offer several pathways for individuals who have an interest in pursuing a career with POBS, in gaining valuable experience in experiential education, or in simply exploring the outdoor industry!

Outward Bound is an international educational movement dedicated to the idea that people are capable of far more than they know. Originally designed for young sailors during World War II, the program fostered leadership qualities needed on the open seas — when ships were “Outward Bound.” Now, all around the world, Outward Bound schools prepare people to take on challenges and achieve more than they ever thought possible.
Our employees are the heart and soul of our organization. Whether leading a group on a wilderness expedition, working with local youth in their communities, or working behind the scenes in the office, our staff share the same mission: to change lives through challenge and discovery. Outward Bound employees inspire, serve, and lead. We believe we are in the business of helping to create a better world.
Outward Bound is a wonderful place to work. We excel at building communities in the office, on our ropes courses, on our expeditions. Employees are dedicated, committed, and hardworking, but still know how to have fun!
As an organization, we strive to offer the same excellence to our staff that we do to our students. We aim to create a supportive environment and serve our employees well. Collaboration, effective problem solving, and creativity are important components in our work life at Outward Bound. Our organization teaches to and works by the values of compassion, integrity, excellence, and inclusion and diversity. Outward Bound is an equal opportunity provider and employer.
