Katie Newsom Pastuszek
While living in Washington, DC during her middle school years, Katie participated in an Outward Bound program that continues to serve as a point of inspiration in her adult life. The daughter of a career Foreign Service Officer, Katie grew up around the world and graduated from high school in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Katie’s professional career began in Philadelphia with 10 years of non-profit management experience at the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia. In the early 1990s (as the mother of two children) she reconnected with her adventure roots through part-time consulting with adventure-based education programs in the Philadelphia area, which led to a connection with New York City Outward Bound (NYCOB). In 1997, Katie joined the Advisory Board of the newly-formed Philadelphia Friends of Outward Bound, then part of the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School (HIOBS). In 1999, the same year she completed Leadership Philadelphia, Katie resigned from the Advisory Board to serve as the solo staff member – the Program Director. Working in collaboration with Baltimore Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School and other Outward Bound Schools nationwide, Katie has led the expansion of today’s Philadelphia Outward Bound School together with a dedicated Board of Trustees.
As the Executive Director, Katie leads a full-time staff of 12 with more than 30 instructors, and oversees the now independently chartered Philadelphia Outward Bound School which annually serves more than 4,200 students, teachers, business leaders and community members from across the greater Philadelphia region, New Jersey, and Delaware.
