Your donations at work
At POBS, we seek innovative ways to apply Outward Bound’s renowned Educational Framework to address emerging social needs. We serve people of all ages and all walks of life. We offer a portfolio of single and multi-day courses that help our students discover that “there is more in them then they thought”, to strengthen character and to build an ability to leadand a desire to serve.
We want our students to have a positive impact on their lives and the lives of those around them. We employ a diverse and compassionate staff of highly trained, skilled and dedicated instructors, facilitators and educators trained to meet needs within our region. We partner with educational institutions, businesses, civic organizations and parents to serve all who wish to participate. That’s how Outward Bound has used challenge and discovery to change lives and prepare people to be capable, compassionate and engaged leaders since our founding in the U.S. in 1962.

Outward Bound for Veterans
POBS delivered Veterans expeditions for 13 transitioning servicemen and women in 2013. These highly focused expedition courses offer 6 days of backpacking and advanced navigation training on the Appalachian trail in south central PA, and include a closing pin ceremony at the Warrior Writers’ Veteran’s Mural in West Philadelphia. Veterans courses cost $2,000 per participant.
“Words alone cannot describe my experience. Getting out in nature and challenging myself to be honest from within is now a core part of my life. My Outward Bound experience inspired me to acknowledge, accept and process whatever challenges come my way, along with making peace with the past.”
- Matt Benko, Outward Bound Vets Course Alum
Outward Bound for Students
Seeking to build positive school cultures, the School District of Philadelphia asked POBS to provide 45 students from four merging rival high schools with a six-week intensive summer Leadership Development Program. Themes included problem solving, team building, challenge course adventure elements, leadership skills, kayak and canoe training and community service projects in partnership with Philadelphia Urban Creators, Philabundance & Awbury Arboretum.
“No one has ever believed in me for that long… to see me from the beginning to the end. I will encourage [my peers] to be a part of Outward Bound and experience the natural things that I had never experienced.”
- Rashaun, South Philadelphia HS Senior, 6-Week Program Alum
