Rappeller Profile: Kelly Tornes

The biggest adventure event of the year is right around the corner! In less than 2 weeks, rappellers will be descending 31 stories from Brandywine Realty Trust’s One Logan Square!  Building Adventure raises crucial funds so we can deliver our mission and serve students.  Visit www.buildingadventure.org for more info.

Now, meet Kelly Tornes, who may be a first time rappeller for Building Adventure, but is an adrenaline junky at heart.

Explain your history with the Philadelphia Outward Bound School:  This is my first event getting involved with POBS specifically, but I previously worked as an instructor for Outward Bound Discovery, down in Florida, instructing 30-day canoe expeditions for at-risk and adjudicated youth.  I’ve witnessed firsthand the impacts these programs have on the deserving populations they serve, and I’m happy to support this amazing organization.

Years participating in Building Adventure: First year!

Total funds raised to date (cumulative): $2,350 and counting.

Day Job:  I’m an interior designer at Blackney Hayes Architects

A lesser known fun fact about you??  I own a sword for the sole purpose of sabering bottles of champagne open… everyone needs a party trick!

Why are you rappelling?  This event is the perfect blend of two things I love:

1) Helping the Philadelphia Outward Bound School provide life changing experiences to disadvantaged teens and adults through charitable giving.

2) A healthy dose of adrenaline.  I was voted “Most Adventurous” in my high school class, and it appears not much has changed.

How will you prepare? I’m rappelling as a member of the CoreNet team, and we’ve had a couple logistical meetings.  Other than that, I’ll be doing a no-rain dance, and trying to get some sleep before the big day.

Your second favorite way to adventure (after BA of course!) I love to travel.  My favorite trip to date was to Peru, where I got to trek the Inca Trail and explore the Amazon.  I’m really into active vacations… hiking, canyoneering, kayaking, cliff jumping… I want to do it all!  The next destination on my travel list is Iceland.
