Gathering Data

Impact data is gathered using the Outward Bound Outcomes Survey (OBOS), which measures self-reported change in key social and emotional skills at the end of an Outward Bound program. The skills in the survey are drawn from the Domains of Thriving SEL framework, for example, students are measured in Perseverance, Assertiveness, Teamwork, etc.

Participants complete a retro pre and post survey at the conclusion of their course.  They reflect on their skills at the time they started the course compared to the completion of course.  The OBOS measures 12 key indicators of social and emotional development for young people ages 10-23 and is designed and validated by Partnerships for Education and Resilience (PEAR).

What the Surveys Show

In 2025, POBS served 7,597 total participants from 103 different organizations. We conducted 1,178 surveys from 760 day program participants and 418 multi-day expedition participants. Here's what the students said:

Overall, the largest growth areas were Group Relationships, Assertiveness, and Social Responsibility.

Educator Experience

445 educators attended as chaperones; 99% (!) reported they:

  • Got to know their students better
  • Learned about students’ strengths and challenges
  • Felt stronger connections and built trust
  • Had fun with their students

Additionally, 520 educators participated in day programs or an expedition. Here are some of their quotes:

“This experience has highlighted the value of collaboration and reinforced how important it is to build trust and mutual support within a team.”

“I’ve gained a deeper understanding of my colleagues - their strengths, working styles, and the ways they support one another.”

“Asking for help is not a weakness.”

These outcomes show what’s possible when young people step outside their comfort zones: they return more confident, more connected, and more ready to learn.

If your school or organization is ready to partner with POBS, we’d love to build that journey with you.
