DISCOVERY FEST 2024 took place Saturday, October 5
Philadelphia Outward Bound School, Audubon Mid-Atlantic, and community partners celebrate the 6th Anniversary of The Discovery Center!
The event attracted an estimated 400 attendees who engaged in various activities. A total of 116 participants took part in ziplining and challenge course experiences on the James McLane Family Challenge Course. Canoeing was equally popular, with 82 participants joining POBS and Audubon staff on the water, learning paddling skills and observing birds around the reservoir. POBS hosted a Backpacking 101 table that showcased POBS program area maps and gear, while other team members were stationed at Outward Bound informational tables, introducing participants to POBS programming opportunities.
Cheers to Audubon staff who added a unique educational aspect by integrating bird and environmental education into the canoeing portion of the day. They provided binoculars, facilitated a popular "create your own bird feeder" craft, led hourly tower tours, and distributed self-led Discovery Center scavenger hunts.
Additionally, a Pennsylvania Naturalist and Fairmount Conservatory provided environmental education, while Project Meow offered an exciting opportunity for kids to interact with cats. Storytime, led by Project Meow and Cecil B. Moore, featured songs and stretches, engaging 15-20 young children. The Strawberry NAC engaged the community and shared information about their services and resources.
In summary, Discovery Day was a successful celebration of community, adventure, and education, bringing neighbors together for a wonderful day at the Discovery Center.
