Philadelphia Outward Bound School

📅 Happy Founders Day!

On September 17, 1992, a small group gathered at Valley Green Inn in Wissahickon Park. Calling themselves the Philadelphia Friends of Outward Bound, they shared a vision: a school that would bring Outward Bound’s life-changing experiences to Philadelphia youth.

That evening, Nancy Goldenberg, Tim Greenwood, Michael Nutter and others inspired a community to help bring the idea to life. By the very next year, 40 Philly students and 8 teachers were on their first expedition.

✨ Today, the Philadelphia Outward Bound School has served more than 85,000 students across the region - proof of what began in that small room at Valley Green Inn.

“A shared commitment to service and belief in the transformative power of Outward Bound is what led Nancy Goldenberg, Michael Nutter, and Tim Greenwood to create the Philadelphia Outward Bound School in 1992. At the time, the idea of building an urban Outward Bound school was a novel approach that challenged convention,” said Justin Ennis, Executive Director, Philadelphia Outward Bound School. “Through hard work and perseverance, their vision took root. More than 30 years later, POBS has served over 85,000 young people and now stands proudly at the vanguard of Outward Bound’s national movement to expand access to outdoor education.”

🙌 We celebrate our founders not just for their vision, but for living it - like when all three rappelled together at Building Adventure.

💙 You can keep their dream alive. This Founders Day, honor their vision by making a gift to Building Adventure at
