SUMMARY

Outward Bound is an international educational movement dedicated to the belief that people are capable of far more than they know. Founded in 1992, the mission of the Philadelphia Outward Bound School (POBS) is to change lives through challenge and discovery. POBS serves PA, NJ, and northern DE, and is one of 10 regional Outward Bound USA schools.

A robust non-profit educational organization, POBS engages thousands of youth and adult participants annually in experiential educational programs that inspire character development, leadership, and community service. All programs, whether single or multi-day, are designed to help participants realize their true potential.

The Logistics Coordinator supports the Associate Director of Logistics and Operations in managing course operations and logistical systems for POBS. Areas of oversight include gear repair and maintenance, storage and pack out systems, program start and end support, base-site equipment warehouse and storage areas, driver training, systems training, and logistics staff oversight.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Work closely with the AD of Logistics and Operations and Program Coordinators to ensure all logistical course support needs are met 

  • Oversee, support, and supervise gear issue, cleanup, and de-issue 
  • Maintain all field equipment and gear 
  • Mentor, oversee, and provide support to staff working in logistics roles 
  • Manage the POBS food room (food storage, bulk food pickups, stock inventory, clean/maintain when necessary) 
  • Train and oversee logistics staff in gear repair/maintenance 
  • Transport students to and from the field in large passenger vans often with trailers and in variable driving situations and conditions 
  • Support Facilities Manager in maintaining appearance and maintenance operations of all grounds and buildings 
  • Preform regular equipment inventories 
  • Work alongside the AD of Logistics and Operations in leading staff trainings 
  • Maintain consistent contact and seamless support for all programs 
  • Provide in-field support to staff and students (includes multi-day base camping)
  • Meet with AD of Logistics and Operations regularly to ensure tasks are accomplished to ensure program integrity

SECONDARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform food and gear pack outs as needed
  • Provide on-call assistance as needed
  • Participate in other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Ability to work in a team environment and support POBS philosophy and mission Comfortable teaching, training, and mentoring staff 
  • Able to work with staff and students from various backgrounds 
  • Must have a safety and quality mindset 
  • Skilled in outdoor equipment usage and repair and general maintenance 
  • Detail-oriented with efficient and practical organizational skills 
  • Ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously 
  • Strong and effective communicator, both written and verbal 
  • Comfortable giving and receiving professional feedback 
  • Comfortable self-starting and working independently

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • 2+ years of experience in the outdoor education/experiential learning field
  • Program support and/or logistics experience preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be 21 years or older
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license for 5+ years and pass a Motor Vehicle Record screening
  • Must procure and pass an FBI Criminal Records Check and Criminal and Child Abuse clearances for Pennsylvania
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 40 pounds
  • Ability to perform job duties from base as well as mobile base camps
  • May be required to work in the field for multi-day periods
  • Must be able to operate large vehicles / tow vehicles for extended periods of time
  • Able to work irregular hours as necessary

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • $30,000 salary for a 9-month full-time position from March to December, plus opportunities for bonus upon achieving set goals
