Founded in 1956 by HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is the world’s leading youth development award with over a million-youth participating in over 130 countries.
The Philadelphia Outward Bound School is proud to be one of 34 partners across the country licensed by the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award USA to implement the award program in their communities. POBS begun participating in the program in 2018, and students first began earning awards in 2020, but due to the Covid pandemic it wasn't until this month that we were able to hold an in-person awards ceremony for participating students.
On Sunday, March 17, ten students and their families and supporters came to The Discovery Center for our first Duke of Edinburgh's International Award USA ceremony to celebrate their remarkable achievements and obtain their Bronze and Silver medals.
Presenting the awards were Honorary British Consul Oliver St. Clair Franklin, CBE, along with Deborah Webster, Honorary Board Member of The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award USA. Also present was Kathryn Kearns who spoke about receiving her Gold award from HRH Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh himself in 1968.
Award participants, parents, supporters and presenters alike enjoyed mingling and refreshments after the ceremony.
