New Partnership Spotlight: Valley Forge Military Academy Joins Forces with Philadelphia Outward Bound School

The Philadelphia Outward Bound School (POBS) is proud to announce an exciting new partnership with Valley Forge Military Academy (VFMA), an international leadership institution where young men discover their potential, fortify their character, and develop into leaders of positive change within their communities and nationwide. Launched in early 2025 as part of VFMA’s ambitious strategic plan, this collaboration exemplifies our shared commitment to experiential education and developing character traits and social and emotional skills essential for dynamic and effective leadership.

VFMA cadets get the opportunity to overcome challenges on our aerial teams course in Fairmount Park.

At POBS, we specialize in creating transformative learning experiences through single and multi-day programs that are designed to challenge, inspire, and empower students. Our courses deeply align with VFMA’s mission of character and leadership development, allowing cadets across all grade levels to actively engage in meaningful, hands-on experiences that reveal their strengths and build confidence.

From canoeing expeditions and high ropes courses to group challenges and reflective leadership activities, our skilled instructors work closely with VFMA staff to tailor the experiences for all cadet levels.

Early results from the partnership have already showcased encouraging growth among cadets, highlighting increased confidence, enhanced teamwork, and deeper personal insights.

Cadets take part as both belayer and climber at Ricks Rocks in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

“We believe we have an important role in helping our school partners realize their most ambitious educational goals,” said Justin Ennis, Executive Director of POBS. “Every moment on an Outward Bound course is designed to foster a sense of connection, confidence, and shared purpose among students. These are essential ingredients for creating a thriving learning environment.”

Katie Newsom, Head of School at VFMA, shares our enthusiasm: “I strongly believe that this program partnership between VFMA and POBS will be the educational catalyst we need for today’s cadets to become tomorrow’s leaders. The opportunity to discover untapped potential through Outward Bound’s time-tested experiential learning approach is a priceless investment for the Academy.”

As this dynamic partnership continues to grow, POBS and VFMA look forward to innovating together and developing educational approaches that can serve as inspirational models for schools across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.
